How many towels do you need for 8 guests?
Short answer
For 8 guests with laundry done on site, plan on 24 bath towels, 12 hand towels, 24 washcloths and 6 bath mats: one set in use, one in the wash and one spare. With off-site laundry or a linen service, plan on 32 bath towels, 16 hand towels and 32 washcloths.

Eight guests fills a three-bedroom with a sofa bed and is the largest group our model gives two bathrooms. It's a common size for two families sharing a house, and it's where laundry starts to set the pace of the turnover. Our sample is a 3-bedroom home with 2 bathrooms: a King bed, two Queen beds and a Full sofa bed. The math: 8 guests × 3 cycles gives 24 bath towels and 24 washcloths; 2 bathrooms × 2 × 3 gives 12 hand towels, plus 6 bath mats.
| Item | On-site laundry (3 cycles) | Off-site or linen service (4 cycles) | Cost on site |

| Washcloths | 24 | 32 | $29.94 |

| Total | 66 | 88 | $341.52 |
Beds for 8 guests
A King bed, two Queen beds and a Full sofa bed in 3 bedrooms take 12 sheet sets with laundry on site. Adding the 8th guest costs $23.97 in towels: 3 bath towels and 3 washcloths. Laundry adds about 1 lb.
| Beds | Sheet sets | Other pieces | Cost |

| King bed | 3 | 11 | $514.92 |

| Full sofa bed | 3 | 4 | $157.96 |

| Total | 12 | 45 | $1,582.52 |
Turnover laundry and closet space
Each turnover washes 8 bath towels, 8 washcloths, 4 hand towels and 2 mats: 12 lb, 1 load. Bedding adds 19.6 lb, washed apart from towels. In all, 3 loads take about 4 hours on one washer and dryer, so an 11 am to 4 pm turnover works only if the first load goes in right away.
Clean spares fill 6½ shelves of a 24 in closet: 44 towels and mats, 8 sheet sets and their covers.
Planning weights, dry: bath towel 0.9 lb (VÅGSJÖN specs), King set 3 lb, Queen set 2.5 lb, Full set 2 lb; 12 lb per load in a 4.5 cu ft washer.
Adjust for your rental
What changes the count
- Laundry off site keeps a set away, which adds a fourth cycle: 22 more pieces for 8 guests (32 bath towels in place of 24).
- With 1 bathroom instead of 2, 8 guests need 6 hand towels and 3 mats; the 24 bath towels stay, because they follow guests.
- The planner adds a laundry bag per bedroom (3 here), so used towels and sheets collect in one place per room during the strip.
Frequently asked questions
Can one washer and dryer keep up with 8 guests?
Just. One turnover sends about 31.6 lb of towels and bedding to the wash: 3 loads, about 4 hours with one washer and one dryer. That fits between an 11 am checkout and a 4 pm check-in only if the first load goes in as soon as guests leave.
Should I switch to a linen service at 8 guests?
A service changes the count more than the work: one set is always away, so you'd stock 32 bath towels instead of 24 and 16 hand towels instead of 12. Compare the service's quote with your cleaner's laundry hours per turnover before you switch.
