How much toilet paper and supplies should I leave guests?

Short answer

For 4 guests staying 3 nights with one bathroom, set out about 7 rolls of toilet paper, 2 rolls of paper towels, 4 kitchen trash bags, 5 fl oz each of shampoo and body wash, 4 fl oz of hand soap and 12 coffee pods or packets. Keep 5 stays' worth in the owner's closet (your par level) and reorder when it's down to 2 stays' worth: for toilet paper, stock 35 rolls and reorder below 14. These are planning rates, so change them to match your receipts.

Consumables are what guests use up: paper, soap, coffee and bags. Each one is counted from a planning rate per guest per night, per night, per stay or per bathroom, then rounded up to whole units for the cleaner to set out. The par level is what your closet holds after a restock; the reorder point is when to buy more. Bathrooms below follow guest count (1 for up to 4 guests, 2 for up to 8).

Planning rates (our assumptions)

These are planning assumptions, not measurements. Change any rate to match your own receipts; the table above updates as you type.

  • Toilet paperStandard rolls. Halve the rate for mega rolls. The extra roll per bathroom is the visible spare.
  • Hand soapBathroom and kitchen sinks together, about 9 ml per guest a day.
  • ShampooAbout one shower per guest a day. Wall dispensers waste less than small bottles.
  • ConditionerFewer guests use it than shampoo.
  • Body washSame shower count as shampoo.
  • Bathroom bin linersA fresh liner in each bathroom bin at every turnover.
  • Paper towelsOne roll on the holder; guests rarely finish it on short stays.
  • Dish soapPer night, not per guest: one sink of dishes a day.
  • Dishwasher podsGuests run it every other night; the extra pod is the cleaner's run at turnover.
  • CoffeeOne cup per guest a day. Add tea, sugar and creamer as their own lines if you stock them.
  • Kitchen trash bagsOne a night, plus a fresh bag in the bin at check-in.
  • SpongesA new sponge for every guest.
  • Laundry detergent podsOn-site laundry only: about one load of sheets per two guests, plus a towel load. Skip with a linen service.

How the counts work

  • Every rate is a planning assumption, not a measurement. Change any of them in the calculator; your receipts after a month are the best rate there is.
  • Set out the same counts every time, so the cleaner restocks to a list and you can spot a short closet at a glance.
  • We haven't checked consumable prices on retailer pages yet, so the cost per stay appears only for the prices you enter. Add them once and the total covers every line you priced.
  • Not included: welcome-basket items, cleaning chemicals the cleaner brings and linens (see the linen calculator).

Frequently asked questions

How many rolls of toilet paper per guest?

Plan about half a standard roll per guest per night, plus one visible spare per bathroom. That's 7 rolls for 4 guests over 3 nights with one bathroom.

What is a par level for a rental?

The amount of each item the owner's closet should hold right after a restock. Here it's 5 stays' worth: for toilet paper, 35 rolls at 4 guests and 3 nights.

When should I restock consumables?

When what's left covers fewer than 2 stays. With a delivery that takes a few days and back-to-back bookings, raise that buffer.

Should consumables be part of the cleaning fee?

Many hosts cover them in the turnover cost. Enter your cost per stay as "Supplies and restock" in the cleaning fee calculator to see the fee that covers it after the platform's cut.
