Short answer

Write your guest review within 14 days of checkout, while the stay is fresh. Keep it honest, specific and short: how the guest communicated, whether they followed the house rules and how they left the home. Stick to facts from the stay, leave out personal details and never trade a good review for anything.

Highlighted parts are details we don't have yet. Fill them in below and they're remembered for every message.

Fill these in first (1 left). Every message reuses them.

[Guest name] stayed at [Rental name] for [number] nights. [How they communicated, such as: They replied quickly and let me know their arrival time in advance.] [How they followed the house rules, such as: They respected the quiet hours and the guest limit.] [How they left the home, such as: The home was left tidy, with the checkout steps done.] [Your overall view, such as: I'd happily host them again.]

When to send it

Write it within a few days of checkout, once the turnover is done and you know how the home was left. Airbnb's Reviews for homes (opens in a new tab) article says both host and guest have 14 days after checkout to submit a review, and that reviews are posted once both have submitted or the window closes, whichever comes first. You can edit your review until it's published.

Tips

  • Be specific and factual. Airbnb's Authentic and trustworthy reviews (opens in a new tab) policy says reviews must be relevant, authentic and trustworthy. They should be based on first-hand experience of the reservation.
  • For a problem, state what happened once, in neutral words: "The guest limit was exceeded on the second night, and extra cleaning was needed." Leave out insults and guesses about why. Airbnb's Content Policy (opens in a new tab) prohibits content that is threatening, demeaning, insulting or harassing, or that publicly discloses another person's private information.
  • Use the guest's first name only, and leave out anything personal, such as who they traveled with or why they came.
  • Don't trade reviews. The reviews policy says reviews may not be provided or withheld in exchange for something of value, and hosts and guests may not threaten a negative review to obtain unwarranted compensation.
  • If a point is only useful for the guest to hear, such as a tip about the trash, send it as a message instead of putting it in a public review.

Frequently asked questions

How long do I have to review a guest on Airbnb?

14 days after checkout. Airbnb posts reviews once both you and the guest have submitted, or when the window ends, whichever comes first.

Can I change my review after I submit it?

Airbnb says you can edit a review until it's published. After that, its reviews policy lets you remove a review you wrote up to 30 days from the date it's published, but you can't post a replacement for that reservation.

Should I mention a problem in a public review?

Yes, if it's a fact other hosts would want to know, such as a broken house rule. Describe it briefly and neutrally, and keep it to what happened during the stay.
